What Edu is reading this week (Oct 11 - 17, 2026)

Posted on Oct 17, 2026

Another week heavy on decompilations and native console ports, next to a growing batch of local inference engines and one Wi-Fi router turned into a software-defined receiver. There is also good Linux and homelab material, from NetBSD finding a new role to an MCP server that lives on an OpenWrt box.

AI, Agents & Local Models

  • TencentCloud/TencentDB-Agent-Memory - Team level memory hub for AI agents that turns conversations, docs and code into four reusable memory assets (chat memory, skills, an LLM wiki and a code graph) shared across agents and frameworks.
  • AgentCraft - Orchestrates agents (Claude Code, OpenCode, Cursor) through a real time strategy game interface: summon agents and subagents, command them and manage their lifecycle, with optional containers and remote control from a phone.
  • claude-subscription-directsdk - Experimental Hermes model provider that runs turns on a Claude Pro or Max subscription through the official Claude Code CLI, so no separate API key or per token bill.
  • OpenCode 2.0 - Major overhaul: the client and server model now runs as a single background process shared by the TUI, the web interface and the desktop app, with a rebuilt API and a pairing flow for other hosts.
  • We made open models run over 2x faster than Ollama / magnitudedev/magnitude - Open source inference engine that tunes its kernels on your hardware when a model is downloaded; the author reports around 2.2x faster decode and 1.3x faster prefill than Ollama across 11 local models on an M4 Pro and a DGX Spark.
  • Embedding Gemma Transcribe - Turns Google’s EmbeddingGemma 2 embedding model into a speech to text model: an hour of audio in about 13 seconds on a base M3 MacBook Air, entirely on device.
  • Connect your AI - Connects Codex or Claude over MCP so you can send a document to PDF TO MP3 and get an audiobook back, with speech billed through your own OpenAI or Gemini key.
  • abhi245y/PS5LM / Qwen 27B at ~20 tok/s on a jailbroken PS5’s GPU - llama.cpp on a jailbroken PS5, running GGUF models natively on the console starting with Qwen 3.8; the fork in the thread became a native app and reports around 20 tokens per second with Qwen 27B.
  • $0.19 vs $12.06 for a ship in a bottle - Same scene generated by Gemini 4 Argon and Claude Opus 5.5 side by side: the author picks Opus for the dolphins, seagulls and lighthouse detail, and calls Gemini’s result decent for almost 64 times less money.
  • Stanford professor predicts frontier AI companies will eventually become biotech companies - Neuroscientist Andrew Huberman, in an Invest Like the Best interview, argues the endgame for labs like OpenAI, Anthropic and Meta is reading from and writing to the brain.
  • I Told My AI Job Interviewer I Love You - A job interview with an AI avatar goes well enough that the candidate says I love you at the end: I thought I wanted a job but I guess I just needed a friend.

Decompilations, Recompilations & Native Ports

  • chasem-dev/sms-launcher - Launcher that sets up and runs the native PC port of Super Mario Sunshine on Windows, macOS and Linux, downloads the tools it needs and gives you one Play button. Bring your own disc image.
  • SubmitGame/awesome-decomp-games - Rated, auto refreshed list of 2,118 decompilation, recompilation and reverse engineering projects covering 1,829 games, with a filterable website on top.
  • Open-Wine-Components/umu-database - Spreadsheet turned database that maps game titles and store code names to umu IDs, so protonfixes work for games from any store and launchers like Lutris and Heroic can query it.
  • snuri00/ps2-web-recomp - PlayStation 2 games in the browser through static recompilation to WebAssembly, with a runtime that draws through WebGPU. The first title is Gran Turismo 4, playing from boot through the menus and races with sound.
  • lonewolf0622/HelixSR - Drop in Direct3D 12 upscaler that runs NVIDIA’s DLSS Model E network as compute shaders, without Tensor Cores, an NVIDIA driver, CUDA or ROCm, targeting RDNA 1 and newer AMD GPUs on Windows and Linux through Proton.
  • decomp.wtf / i12bp8/decomp.wtf - An AI agent that decompiles a game you own into C that compiles to the exact same bytes, checking every attempt with the game’s original compiler. The author archived it after pushback from the decompilation community.
  • Sunsetting decomp.dev - decomp.dev, the site that tracked matching decompilation progress since 2024, is shutting down: the team says current models can really speed decompilation up with human review, but projects forked to be finished with AI have broken the community.
  • recomp.board - Tracks who is recompiling or decompiling what: 2,412 project rows with a public repo behind each one, so you can check that a game is still unclaimed before starting.
  • BelmanteGu/SuperMarioWonderRecomp - Static recompilation of Super Mario Bros. Wonder 1.0.0 to native C++, with Nintendo’s NVN graphics API implemented on Vulkan and MoltenVK, targeting macOS, Android and Windows. No game assets included.
  • [Release] Conker’s Bad Fur Day native PS Vita port - Version 1.0.0 of the native port at 30 fps, with six languages and an in game updater.
  • Someone decompiled Blockblast and turns out they are farming us for ad rev - Someone decompiled Blockblast and reports that the game is farming players for ad revenue.
  • SubmitGame/awesome-ai-game-dev-tools - 159 active open source AI tools for making games and for decompiling, remixing and mashing up games you own, filtered to 100+ stars and a push in the last year.
  • The 2D physics prototype behind GTA’s vehicles - Pat Kerr recreates in JavaScript the 2D vehicle physics demo he wrote in GFA BASIC on an Atari ST in 1996, which became the basis of GTA’s vehicle system, now playable as Motion Lab.

Linux, Systems & Hardware

Security & Privacy

  • Cyberattack cripples supermarket fridges across Europe - Hackers triggered automatic defrosting on refrigerators in France, Belgium and the Netherlands, with delivery and store prices also affected.
  • WebAuthn.wtf - Developer oriented guide to the Web Authentication API: registration and authentication ceremonies, authenticators, browser and device support, plus debuggers and demos.
  • Wanted to download an ISO, ended up writing a kernel exploit - A TP-Link EAP770 access point corrupted large downloads over Wi-Fi, and since the vendor shell would not let him write the two zeros in sysfs that fix it, the author wrote a kernel exploit for his own access point.

Development & Web Tools

  • Redesigning source control at Anthropic - Anthropic on replacing its source control with an in house system called Scion in five months, as merges per day went from around 2,500 in May to over 30,000 in September.
  • aboard-io/tinylittleoffice - Free office suite where the document lives inside the link: no account, nothing saved unless you choose, and whoever has the link has the document.
  • Gist HTML Preview / Introducing gisthost.github.io - gistpreview renders an HTML file saved in a GitHub Gist when you append the gist ID to the URL, and Simon Willison forked it as gisthost to make a few small changes to a tool whose last commit was ten years ago.
  • Iosevka - Open source monospace and quasi proportional typeface family for code and terminals, now at 34.9.0, with configurable widths, weights, slopes and ligation sets.
  • Guitoro - Virtual guitar in the browser: play with the keyboard or by touch, switch between steel string acoustic, classic, electric and bass, and slow a song to 20% to see which strings each strum hits.
